Indication/Significance:	Suspected iron deficiency, especially in persons with an increased prevalence of iron deficiency like women with menstrual blood loss, infants, athletes performing endurance training, repeat blood donors Verification of an iron deficiency in persons with borderline ferritin levels In patients with normocytic, normochromic anaemia and chronic inflammation or malignant tumour Assessment of the iron balance in anaemia patients in combination with the analysis of ferritin prior to the commencement of a rHu-EPO therapy As a marker of response to therapy with erythropoietin
Interpretation:	Increased: Functional more… Increased: Functional iron deficiency Hyper-regenerative anaemias (e.g. haemolysis) The parameter is dependent on age, sex, chronic diseases, infections, tumours and liver diseases.
