Indication/Significance: | Monitoring of diuretics therapy |
Interpretation: |
The excretion of sodium, more… The excretion of sodium, potassium and chloride in the urine is dependent on the intake or increased excretion of these ions in other body secretions or in the stool. The urine electrolytes should always be measured relating to values measured simultaneously in the serum, the current acid-base status, the urine pH value and in rare cases the ammoniuria. Sodium excretion in healthy persons is strongly dependent on the sodium chloride intake. With a sodium-free diet, sodium excretion drops to 1 - 3 mmol/l in healthy persons after 3 - 5 days. Whereas in chronic renal diseases with sodium chloride and water loss, hyponatraemia and hypovolaemia (salt-wasting kidney) sodium excretion cannot be reduced below 10 - 15 mmol/l, even after 7 - 21 days of a sodium-free diet. |
