1-2 ml for each sample

• Lower respiratory tract:bronchial lavage (BAL) (preferred) or sputum (induced as per instruction) or tracheal secretion Sputum tubes with screw cap
• Upper respiratory tract: nasopharyngeal swab (preferred), -lavage or -aspirate or pharyngeal swab, -lavage

If possible, please take a sample from each respiratory tract in parallel.

We refer to the WHO guideline published for A(5N1) "Collecting, preserving and shipping specimens for the diagnosis of avian influenza A(H5N1) virus infection" for further details in reference to sampling correctly. Further informations: Homepage of the Robert-Koch-Institut (RKI) or the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

MATERIAL / PACKING SHIPPING

1. swab to be sealed in a liquid-proof plastic tube / protection bottle -> DO NOT USE GEL-COATED SWABS/TUBES
2. samples to be put into the safety-bag along with leakage protection (e.g. cellulose) and the bags to be labelled with URGENT - 'Corona'
3. if collected and shipped and arrived at the lab within 72 hours, storage at 4°C and sent refrigerated

Please bear in mind that the samples will be autoclaved immediately upon receipt in case of defect, broken or leaked package, bag or tube.
