| Testcode: | E_PRSAK |
| Specimens: | Citrated plasma, frozen (cp) |
| Preanalytics/Notes: | Please fill the citrate tube exactly to the black marking – swirl carefully several times immediately after collection to avoid clots. Centrifuge immediately for at least 15 min. at 1500 x g. Carefully remove the plasma / supernatant using a pipette and transfer to a second tube without additives (native tube). Please label the tube as citrated plasma, freeze and send frozen. Do not take blood from horizontal catheters. If coagulation factors (factor II to XIII) are also required, at least one additional tube of frozen citrated plasma is needed. |

| Indication/Significance: | - Thrombophilia screening - Suspicion of congenital or acquired protein S deficiency |
| Interpretation: |
Congenital protein S more… Congenital protein S deficiency: - Type I: Partially reduced concentration of free protein S and total protein S. - Type II: Normal concentration of free and total protein S, but reduced activity. - Type III: Normal total protein S concentration with a reduced proportion of free protein S and therefore reduced activity. Causes of acquired PS deficiency: -1. Vitamin K deficiency or dicoumarol therapy. In addition, vitamin K-dependent factors (II, VII, IX and X) are reduced, resulting in an increased risk of bleeding. 2.Systemic therapy with sex hormones, pregnancy, liver disease and certain chronic infections such as AIDS 3.Disseminated intravascular coagulopathies (DIC), deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolisms 4.Early stages of inflammatory processes (transient reduction in protein S activity) 5.Chronic or transient occurrence of anti-protein S autoantibodies, e.g. in children with chickenpox (rare). |
