Preanalytics/Notes:	Use special tube for metal analysis. As lead is predominantly bound to erythrocytes in the blood (approx. 90 %), the quantitative determination should always be carried out in whole blood, e.g. EDTA blood or heparin blood. Serum is not suitable as test material.

Indication/Significance:	Suspected lead poisoning Monitoring of exposed persons: Printing and paint industry, petrol stations and refineries (anti-knock agents), PVC rubber industry, accumulator manufacturers. Acute lead poisoning only occurs seldom. An increased lead intoxication is also possible through foodstuff containing lead, paints, rust protection, old water supply piping, pottery (glaze with colours containing lead, mostly from abroad) and exhaust fumes. Symptomes of lead poisoning are: impairement of emapoietic system neurological anomalies feeling of faintness, loss of appetite poor concentration and nervousness headache blue line among the gum pallor facial skin nausea vomitting abdominal pain hypertension spasms encephalopathy
Interpretation:	Lead is mainly bound to more… Lead is mainly bound to erythrocytes. The half-life in blood is approx. 20 days. Valuation of lead intoxication occurs in conjunction with Delta-aminolevulinic acid in the urine and porphyrin diagnostic in blood. At increased lead values , repeated testing is recommended. Furthermore, the source of lead esposure must be found and eliminated. Foetal damage is possible if the mother is exposed to an increased amount of lead. close
