In the pre-diabetic more… In the pre-diabetic phase or on manifestation of type I diabetes mellitus, autoantibodies against human insulin can occur. Insulin autoantibodies are more strongly correlated with the age of patients than the IA-2 antibodies. In children <5 years, IAA can be detected in 90-100% of all cases, whereas the antibody prevalence in children <12 years is only about 40% and decreases even further in adult age. These antibodies also show cross-reactivity with insulin from other species. In rare cases, antibodies to exogenous insulin can be induced in insulin-dependent patients. |
