Preanalytics/Notes:	The sample only has a limited stability (8h at room temperature), therefore freeze serum, if necessary, and dispatch frozen. Avoid stress situations that lead to an increased release of HGH. Blood sampling in the morning after 10 - 12 h of fasting. Patients should stop taking interfering medications 3 -4 days prior to blood sampling. Levodopa, insulin, beta blockers (propranolol) or oestrogens lead to a HGH increase, phenothiazine (e.g. chlorpromazine) reduce the HGH level. Patients receiving high doses of Biotin (> 5 mg/day) should be sampled at least 8 hours after the last aplication, as high levels of the Biotin may interfere with the test system.

Interpretation:	Basal HGH more… Basal HGH concentrations: A HGH basal value is of low significance. Normal values do not rule out a disease. Depending on the problem, standardised stimulation or suppression tests including the measurement of HGH concentrations are required. Decreased: An insufficiency of the adenohypophysis can only be diagnosed if the results of the stimulation test are pathological. With high-normal levels of HGH corresponding to the standard for the patient' age it is unreasonable to assume a relevant HGH deficiency. Increased: Acromegaly, pituitary macrosomia: diagnosis only possible if the suppression test result is pathological. With a HGH basal value of < 1 ng/ml, a HGH excess is very unlikely though. A single value of HGH is insufficient for diagnosing a growth hormone deficiency; please analyse IGF-1 and/or IGFBP-3. Should IGF-1 and/or IGFBP-3 deviate downwards by more than one standard deviation, a functional test is recommended in compliance with the current guidelines for the diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency in childhood and adolescence, if the clinical and radiological criteria mentioned in the guideline are also fulfilled. close
