Preanalytics/Notes:	Adults: If possible, constant dietary methods, no prolonged fasting, no smoking, discontinuation of medication (heparin, adrenaline, beta blockers, etc.) before the blood sample is taken. In children, if a hereditary defect in fatty acid oxidation or ketolysis is suspected, it is recommended to fast for 15 hours before the blood sample is taken.

Indication/Significance:	The determination of free fatty acids serves as a supplement for determination of total cholesterol, LDL and HDL as well as triglycerides.
Interpretation:	The release of fatty more… The release of fatty acids from triglycerides is controlled by a variety of hormonal factors, some hormones promote triglyceride cleavage and thereby increase the concentration of free fatty acids, whereas others inhibit the cleavage of triglycerides and thus cause a drop in the blood-fatty acid concentration. From a diagnostic perspective, therefore, both increased and decreased fatty acid concentrations can be significant. close
