Specimens: | 500 µl Serum (s) |
Preanalytics/Notes: | It is important that serum is sent from blood which has coagulated 60-120 minutes before being separated. Owing to the continuous release of ECP, sending in whole blood may lead to false high values. When using sampling tubes with separation gel, the serum has to be transferred into a separate tube and labelled accordingly immediately after centrifugation. Patients receiving high doses of Biotin (> 5 mg/day) should be sampled at least 8 hours after the last aplication, as high levels of the Biotin may interfere with the test system. |

Duration: | 2 days |
Indication/Significance: | Parameters of severe allergic disease progression |
Interpretation: |
As ECP is not released more… As ECP is not released from pre-activated eosinophil granulocytes until the blood coagulates, the determination provides an insight into the cell activation state in the peripheral blood. This does not necessarily have to correlate with the activation state of effectors e.g. skin, lugs, nose. Nor can a connection be established to the number of eosinophil granulocytes in the peripheral blood. Basal ECP values are subject to large inter-individual fluctuations. Therefore, the ECP determination is only of significance in the scope of an assessment of the progress (longitudinal assessment) in patients with severe allergic diseases. The correct analysis of ECP requires serum which has been separated after 60 - 120 minutes of coagulation. Sending blood, can cause falsely high results due to the continuous release of ECP. When using tubes with separation gel please decant the serum into another tube after centrifuging. |
