Interpretation: |
A urine sample testing more… A urine sample testing positive for leucocytes is a clear-cut sign of infection. "Sterile leukocyturia" without cultural detection of bacteria may occur in tuberculosis, interstitial nephritis, under antibiotic treatment or with pathogens that are not easily culturable. Some bacterial pathogens reduce nitrate to nitrite. A positive test thus indicates urinary tract infection. Hematuria can be a sign of urinary tract inflammation, calculi, tumors or bilharziosis. Ketonuria indicates decompensated diabetes or prolongated fasting. Alkaline urine can indicate urinary tract infection, very acidic urine can stem from diabetic ketoacidosis. Urobilinogen may be found in cases of liver pathology or hemolysis. Renal diseases (i.e. diabetic nephropathy) or multiple myeloma may result in proteinuria. Glucosuria is usually the result of improperly controlled diabetes or certain antidiabetic medications. |
