Preanalytics/Notes:	Since the activity of diamine oxidase greatly depends on the patients' current physical condition, the sample must be taken while or at the latest 2 days after the histamine intolerance symptoms occur. The histamine tolerance diagnosis should correlate with the current values of the histamine concentration in heparin plasma. The DAO activity may be inhibited by alcohol and various medications, for example. The determination of DAO is not suitable for pregnant women because their DAO results may be falsified.

Indication/Significance:	Suspected histamine intolerance in patients with the following symptoms: Patients can suffer from e.g. skin irritations, headache, swelling of the nasal mucous membrane, breathing difficulty, circulatory distress, diarrhoea among other things. Especially a swelling of the nasal mucous membrane (incl. breathing difficulty) typically occur after the consumption of red wine and cheese.
Interpretation:	In persons showing more… In persons showing typical symptoms, a DAO activity of < 10 U/ml was measured in nearly all cases. Persons without symptoms normally have values of > 15 U/ml. There is a connection between the histamine intolerance and a decreased vitamin B6 level. close
