| Testcode: |
E_CALC1 |
| Specimens: |
500 µl Serum, frozen (s) |
| Preanalytics/Notes: |
- Let blood sample (without additives) coagulate after sampling, centrifuge immediately, remove serum, transfer serum into a new tube, label the tube accordingly, freeze and dispatch deep-frozen with dry ice.
- Patients receiving high doses of Biotin (> 5 mg/day) should be sampled at least 8 hours after the last aplication, as high levels of the Biotin may interfere with the test system.
- Please note: results obtained using different methods and/or test manufacturers cannot be compared with one another. The course of tumor markers should always be assessed by the same test.

| Set-up: |
Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat Sun |
| Duration: |
1 day |
| Indication/Significance: |
- Medullary thyroid carcinoma (C-cell carcinoma): postoperative monitoring of the progress together with CEA, for example
- Diagnostic assessment of nodular goitre
- Family screening in patients with medullary thyroid carcinoma
- Screening of patients with suspected multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN2)
- In the family screening priority is given to the molecular biology diagnosis of mutations in the RET-proto-oncogene.
- Patients with phaeochromocytoma possibly associated with MEN2
- Suspected ectopic production of calcitonin, e.g. in the case of the small-cell bronchial carcinoma
- Therapy-refractory diarrhoea
|
| Interpretation: |
Increased: Medullary more… Increased: - Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC)
- Elevated calcitonin values are also observed in the case of the following conditions:
- C-cell hyperplasia (CCH)
- Renal insufficiency
- Hypercalcaemia
- Medication with proton pump inhibitors
- Medication with calcitonin or salmon calcitonin
- Paraneoplastic syndrome (e.g. small-cell bronchial carcinoma)
- Chronic alcoholism
- Auto-immune thyroiditis, Hashimoto's thyroiditis
- Bacterial inflammations (procalcitonin as a marker of a bacterial infection)
- Severe general diseases
