ADAMTS13 is an enzyme more… ADAMTS13 is an enzyme that is responsible for the specific splitting of unusually large vWF molecules. These large vWF molecules can lead to the formation of platelet thrombi. In the case of a decreased activity of ADAMTS13, unusually large vWF multimers can accumulate and lead to thromboses caused by platelet aggregation, which in turn can result in a thrombotic-thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Inhibitors against ADAMTS13 are an important triggering factor for TTP. A significantly reduced protease activity (< 5 %) is specific for a TTP. However, a protease activity that is reduced to such a great extent can only be found in less than 50 % of the patients, according to some studies. The indication for a plasma exchange therapy must be made independently of the result of the protease determination.Information on the therapy such as the administration of FFP (fresh frozen plasma) or time of blood sampling e.g. before plasmapheresis is important for the interpretation of the results. |
